November 9th and 10th of this year was held the second International Symposium of Stevia in Asunción, Paraguay.
This meeting was organized by the CAPASTE - Cámara Paraguaya de la Stevia - paraguayan body intended to promote the local production of stevia and stéviosides in the world.
The object of this meeting was to gather the international experts of the stevia to share the last studies made on the subject and to prepare the next submission of the stevia for the JEFCA (JOINED EXPERT FAO / WHO COMMITTEE ONE ADDITIVE FOOD) to establish an ADI definitive ( Acceptable Daily Intake) for the stevia.
Let us remind that in 2004, further to the 63rd summit of the JEFCA, a temporary ADI of 0-2mg / kg was established for stéviosides with for objective to fix the ADI in the year 2007 (cf. link PDF).

What want to say these figures? 2mg / kg of steviosides represents, for a person of 60kg, 120mg of pure steviosides or 1,2g of dried leaves, that is the equivalent about 30g of white sugar a day. Let us remind that on average, it is consumed 7,2kg of sugar a year by a person or a little less of 20g a day on average.
This temporary ADI is thus the same order of height as the consumption averages of sugar.
To return to Asunción's symposium, here is an extract of the report drafted by the CAPASTE: « Study : “Repeated exposure to dietary and therapeutic doses in normotensive and hypotensive subjects and those with Diabetes types 1 and 2”. Results of human studies using 80 patients concluded : - Long-term consumption of steviol glycosides is considered safe in humans. - At sweetening doses, steviol glycosides have no pharmacological effects. No adverse effects were observed in glucose levels nor in blood pressure in subjects that would be considered to have normal levels. There is evidence that at higher, therapeutic levels, steviol glycosides have a favorable effect on hyperglucemic and hypertensive subjects. - Long-term exposure to steviol glycosides will not affect other parameters such as lipids, liver and kidney functions, etc.»
Hardly of these conclusions, the next submission in the JEFCA is henceforth finalized so that a definitive ADI can be fixed. This submission will be carried by Japan and will take place last week of November.
