Pierre Christen | 12 July 2011
The steviol glycosides extracted from Stevia get closer to the ultimate stage which will see their authorization at the European level. The European Commission via the committee " Standing the Food Chain and Animal Health " voted unanimously on July 04th of this year in favour of the text authorizing them as food additive, according to the principle of an amendment to the Annexe II of the regulation n°1333 / 2008.
The project of regulation will be passed on to the Parliament as soon as the translations will be finished. For the moment, the date of the ballot to the European Parliament is not been definite yet. According to our information, the text could be voted and, in case of positive exit, published in November, 2011. " This vote will supply to the European consumers an acalorique sweetener of natural origin, and not only in France where it has been approved for almost two years ", is delights Carl Horn, CEO of The Real Stevia Company ( Granular ) and president of International Stevia Council.
The project of regulation integrates the specifications, that we can reveal you exclusively. As expected, it foresees the license of extracts of Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni including at least 95 % of glycosides of steviol (stevioside, rebaudiosides A, B, C, D, E and F, steviolbioside, rubusoside and dulcoside, in dry extract). In the form of clear white or yellow powder, it will bring a power sweetening from 200 to 300 times superior in saccharose. The code E 960 is attributed to Steviol Glycosides.
To fix the level of use, the Committee took into account both opinions of Efsa, which indicate possible overtakings of the DJA. From the significant contribution of soft drinks to the contribution of steviol glycosides, the level of use authorized in the flavored drinks was reduced to 80 mg / l. What should allow only a limited energy reduction.
In January, International Stevia Council explains that the EFSA used, in its calculations of exposure, models supposing that all the foodstuffs, and not the only ones produced in reduced energy value were going to be sweetened only with the extracts of Stevia, and it in the authorized maximal doses, and in categories of products which were not asked by the petitioners.
Here are the categories of food as well as the maximum doses which will be proposed to the vote of the euro-representatives :
